Virgil Abloh’s Most Iconic Moments

Today we lost an icon. Virgil Abloh - who pioneered luxury street-fashion and is considered one of the most prolific creatives of our generation - lost his battle to a rare, aggressive form of cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma.

“He chose to endure his battle privately since his diagnosis in 2019, undergoing numerous challenging treatments, all while helming several significant institutions that span fashion, art, and culture,” a post from his estate read.

The designer, entrepreneur, and artist contributed to The Culture across mediums and with no bounds. From launching Pyrex Vision in 2012 , to the infamous “Two Virgils”, we list his most iconic moments below:

PYREX VISION / Off-White

In 2012, Virgil fully emerged on the scene as an It-designer with the brand “PYREX VISION”. The first collection sold out almost immediately, and several years later it was rebranded to Off-White, where he continued to push the limits of street-culture and high-fashion.

Directing A$AP Rocky’s Fashion Killa Visual

This song was a banger, but the video, featuring Rihanna, made it a hip-hop / pop classic.

Having started his career as a creative director for Kanye West, Abloh continued to create visuals and artwork for music artist throughout his career.

Artistic Director of Louis Vuitton Menswear

The success of Off-White landed Abloh a job at Louis Vuitton, where he became the Artistic Director of the brands menswear line in March 2018.

Already a popular and influential designer, this position catapulted him to icon status. At his debut presentation, “We are the World”, everything from the theme to the emotional moment he shared with Kanye during the finale, became a moment in fashion / pop culture history. The front row consisted of Naomi Campbell, Rihanna, Chadwick Boseman, A$AP Rocky, Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott and more.

The same year he was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Throughout his time at Louis Vuitton, Virgil would continue to explore and blur the lines of intersectionality.

“MARKERAD” and Ikea Collaboration

The streets went absolutely crazy for this one! In my opinion, it’s one of the most significant collaborations of Abloh’s career.

“Developed with millennial, new homeowners in mind - whether living as singles, couples, or co-living - this collection offers a way to make a statement in the home with budget-friendly and fashionable objects. Created with democratic design in mind, this collection fuses functionality with street cred and high cultural references.”

Serena Williams in Off-White x Nike for the 2018 U.S. Open

In another iconic collab, Abloh styled Serena Williams for the 2018 U.S. Open. In a statement to Vogue, the designer said, “When I was thinking about outfits for Serena, I was thinking about her playing the game and her aesthetic while she is. Also about the confidence that’s needed while playing at the top level of tennis.”

Although Serena was known for her bold fashion choices on the court, the athlete had never worn a tutu. The look is one of her most memorable to-date.

During the Spring of 2020, during the height of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd’s cases, Virgil donated a whopping $50 to the Black Lives Matter movement - and Black Twitter clowned him, respectfully.

Even unintentionally, this man had an impact on The Culture. Keeping it “Two Virgils” became synonymous with “Keeping it 100” for a moment in time. But now, I feel like it’s going to be forever.
