7 Movies and TV Shows About Good Witches to Watch This Halloween

Tis’ the season for supernatural and super scary movies. But sometimes, you aren’t in the mood for slasher films, or even ghosts and ghouls. Sometimes you simply want something that will only startle you a little, and leaves you with a warm and fuzzy feeling….versus something that will have you sleeping with the lights on and with one eye open.

Personally, I love movies (and TV shows) about witches! Besides the fact that they’re totally relatable [burns sage], they usually are about strong, every-day women, who have to embrace their inner magic in order to overcome some obstacle.

Although we are all “witches” possessing a little bit of unique magic meant to serve the greater good, I did realize one issue while compiling this list; there really aren’t many movies or tv shows that show women of color in this light. However, the recent obsession with spells, tarot, and herbs have started a conversation about diversity and inclusion within the “witch” community. We’ve seen WOC (witches of color) on True Blood, American Horror Story (Coven, and Apocalypse), and even on the reboot of Charmed. Bet yet and still, we have a long way to go. I’m talking big screen; Ava DuVernay as the director, Zoe Kravitz as the lead, and Mrs. Badu on the soundtrack. After all, the first recorded witch in postcolonial America is a black woman. But I digress. I could literally go on all day, but thats another post for another time. Until then, find something witchy to watch this Halloween from our list of Movies and TV Shows About Good Witches.

1. Twitches

This Disney Channel Original Movie, starring Tia and Tamara Mowry, premiered in 2005. It tells the story of two unassuming witches who were separated at birth and were adopted by two different families. The sisters meet on their 21st birthday and must use their new found powers to save Coventry, the world in which they were born.

This is a great movie for the entire family!

2. American Horror Story: Coven

Okay, so this isn’t exactly a movie. But the third season of the FX horror anthology television series, American Horror Story, was quite a treat! The story follows a coven of witches who struggle with power, internal conflict, and demons of the past.

This one isn’t so much for the family, but is a beautifully horrific story about modern witchcraft, voodoo magic, and sisterhood.

3. The Craft

If you haven’t seen, or at least heard of this movie, you’ve obviously been living under a rock. The Craft is like the Clueless of supernatural movies. It follows a high school girl, Sarah, who has telekinetic gifts that appeal to a group of three “wannabe” witches, who happen to be seeking a fourth member for their rituals. It’s all fun and games until their spells lead to dangerous, and even deadly consequences.

4. Hocus Pocus

This 90’s cult classic is actually about evil witches from 1693 Salem - but it’s a Disney Film, so it’s fun and light-hearted. When three witches are accidentally resurrected 300 years after being hanged for the murder of a young girl, they are horrified to find that Halloween is now a holiday, and wreak havoc on 1993 Salem.

5. Practical Magic

I loved this movie, even before I fully understood that they were witches! This powerful story is about two sisters with a bond stronger than magic. Together, the sisters overcome prejudice in their small town, as well as a curse that has followed their family for centuries.

This film is great for a girls-night-in!

6. Charmed

Meet the Halliwell sisters, my favorite fictional witches of all time! Even if you didn’t watch Charmed, you’ve at least heard of it…hopefully. This television series lasted eight seasons, and continues it’s story through comic books. In short, the Halliwell sisters come into their powers after the death of their grandmother, and try their best to live normal lives as they save the world from demons and the apocalypse (on multiple occasions).

The series was recently rebooted by Jane The Virgin showrunner, Jennie Snyder Urman, for the 2018–19 television season and is described as being “fierce, funny, and feminist”. The new cast also follows three (Latina) sisters who come into their powers after the death of their mother, and must decide if they are willing to fulfil their destiny as witches. While I’m all the way here for Brujería magic, I’m not so sure about a reboot. But only time will tell.

You can watch the original series on Netflix.

7. Witches of Eastwick

When three women, who happen to be; Cher (Alexandra), Michelle Pfeiffer (Sukie), and Susan Sarandon (Jane), are seduced by the same man - who happens to be Jack Nicholson (Daryl Van Horne ), all hell breaks loose! After courting the women for sometime, they begin to notice strange things about Daryl, including his otherworldly powers, and question his intentions. Eventually he tells the women that they are witches, and they use their new found powers to take back their lives.
